Late Season Veggies

The gardening season is almost over and all that remains to be done is harvesting, a bit of weeding, and putting the garden to rest, right?

Not so fast!

Most of the same vegetables that you planted in the spring are also happy in the cool autumn weather. So go over your list for your March and April plantings and most of them that mature with out a lot of fussiness will be good for planting mid August.

Here is a quick list:

Beets
Turnips
Cabbage
Kale
Lettuce
Onion
Rutabaga
Spinach
Peas
Garlic
Swiss chard
Mustard greens
Dandelion

Have fun with your fall garden!

  1. So no broccoli, or broc. raab, or cauliflower or Kohlrabi in late fall? Only plant those in spring? How about bok choi or Chinese cabbage? Radish? Daikon radish? Parsnips? Just curious...I like a LOT of crazy veggies, lol!

  2. You will note this is a quick list. Raab, radishes, and any other brassica will do well unless it has a long maturation period. So if it has about a 60 day maturation or less you are golden.

If it needs more time, you will have to test the variety for cold tolerance in your area.

    1. Types that are quick maturing. Your best bet is a green onion, or even full sized onions to harvest as you use them.
